Ifrane is a modern european looking and green little town with a very famous english speaking university, it is a good base to explore the area for the less adventurous and those who want the comfort of a modern hotel. The area is a very popular week-end destination for moroccans and therefore it is very busy on saturdays, sundays and holidays. The cedar tree forest is unique. Today, unfortunately it is only seen as a destination for a short excursion with chances to feed monkeys! Some local and international organizations are developping actions of sensibilisation to problems threatening this unestimable heritage. Each visitor coming, instead of being one more element participating to the destruction of its fragile ecological balance, should become an ambassador of its preservation. It is worth it. We would like to motivate you discover this region in a sustainable way. This means respecting some rules. Try to learn about this ecosystem and tell local people how important it is to preserve it. The more environment conscious people will come, the more actions will be taken to protect this unique heritage. Do not buy animals, do not feed monkeys, do not buy cedar honey (some people burn cedar trees to chase bees and collect the honey from a wild swarm), show your interest for unspoilt nature...
There are many other wild
areas in the Middle Atlas for the nature lovers. But we strongly recommend
to ask a local specialist if you want to arrange some "off the beaten
tracks" tours in some of the most remote places of Morocco.
